Custom domains — bring your own

On every tier, including Free, your AthenAI site lives at {your-slug}.athenaigrowth.com. That subdomain is yours forever — no time limit, no per-month cost, no downgrade trap.

Custom-domain support — bring your own domain, e.g. mybusiness.com — is on the roadmap for paid tiers (Solo and above). The integration work (Cloudflare for SaaS / Custom Hostnames, the Settings → Domain UI, the verification + SSL provisioning flow, the plans.ts feature gate) is in active development.

This article covers what works today (the free subdomain), what’s coming (custom domains), and what your domain situation looks like when it lands.

  • Today: every tenant gets a free {your-slug}.athenaigrowth.com subdomain. It works on every tier, doesn’t expire, and you can put real traffic at it.
  • On the roadmap: custom-domain support (yourbusiness.com) on Solo and above. We’ll publish full setup instructions — including the DNS record and SSL provisioning flow — when the Settings → Domain UI ships.
  • In the meantime: if you’ve bought yourbusiness.com already, hold onto it; it’ll be a one-step attach when the surface goes live. Or use it for a “We’re moving here soon” splash page until then.

When you sign up, you pick a slug (e.g. acme-coaching) and your AthenAI site is reachable at acme-coaching.athenaigrowth.com immediately. That URL:

  • Is yours forever. We don’t take it down. We don’t reclaim it if you cancel. We don’t expire it on Free.
  • Has SSL out of the box (Cloudflare-managed cert; you don’t have to configure anything).
  • Is on Cloudflare’s edge — same speed, reliability, and DDoS protection as a paid custom domain.
  • Can take real traffic. People can buy from this URL today. We’ve had Free-tier customers run six-figure ad campaigns at their *.athenaigrowth.com subdomain.

If you ever upgrade and attach a custom domain (when that ships), the subdomain stays live alongside it — you don’t lose your old URL.

When custom domains land: what tier you’ll need

Section titled “When custom domains land: what tier you’ll need”

Per DEC-2026-05-06-09 (RATIFIED), the tier model for custom domains is:

TierDomain
FreeSubdomain only — {your-slug}.athenaigrowth.com
Solo ($97/mo)Custom domain (when shipped)
Growth ($297/mo)Custom domain (when shipped)
Scale ($797/mo)Custom domain + multi-site (multiple separate sites) when shipped
Custom ($2,500+/mo)Custom domain + multi-subaccount + white-label (when shipped)

If you’re on Free today and you want a custom domain, the path is: stay on Free for now (your subdomain is good for real traffic) → upgrade to Solo when custom-domain attach goes live → attach your domain in one step.

What you need to do now if you already have a domain

Section titled “What you need to do now if you already have a domain”

If you’ve bought yourbusiness.com from a registrar (Cloudflare Registrar, Namecheap, Porkbun, GoDaddy — doesn’t matter where), here’s the practical advice:

  • Hold onto it. Keep it registered. We’ll publish a one-step attach flow when the Settings → Domain surface lands.
  • Don’t bother pre-pointing the DNS yet. There’s no AthenAI endpoint to point it at. We’ll give you the exact DNS record (CNAME or A) when the integration goes live.
  • Use it for a splash page in the meantime, if you want. A “We’re launching at [yourbusiness.com] soon — sign up at [yoursubdomain.athenaigrowth.com]” pattern works fine and lets you start collecting domain authority signals.

This applies whenever custom-domain attach lands — but stating the principle now so it’s clear up front:

  • AthenAI never owns your domain. You bought it; it stays at your registrar.
  • Your *.athenaigrowth.com subdomain stays live (Free).
  • When custom-domain attach ships, canceling a paid tier removes the AthenAI side of the attach but leaves your registrar setup untouched. You re-point the domain at whatever you want next.

What’s on the roadmap (and what’s not)

Section titled “What’s on the roadmap (and what’s not)”

Honest about scope:

  • Custom-domain attach (Solo+). On the roadmap, in active development. We’ll publish a click-by-click walkthrough when the Settings → Domain UI ships.
  • Domain registration through AthenAI (buy your domain inside the dashboard at cost). Roadmap, not started. For now, register at any registrar.
  • Multi-domain on one tenant (one AthenAI site reachable at both yourbusiness.com and yourbusiness.io). Roadmap, not committed to a sprint.
  • Email forwarding from your domain. Out of scope today; AthenAI isn’t an MX provider. When you bring a custom domain, set up email forwarding at your registrar (most offer it free) or use a service like ImprovMX.

Why we’re calling this out as roadmap rather than shipping it

Section titled “Why we’re calling this out as roadmap rather than shipping it”

Two reasons:

  1. Custom-hostname provisioning has subtle failure modes (DNS propagation delays, SSL cert provisioning races, hostname-to-tenant mapping at the edge). We’d rather ship it once and have it work for every tenant than ship it half-working and field tickets for the next month.
  2. The free subdomain is genuinely good. Most operators we’ve talked to are running real traffic at their *.athenaigrowth.com URL today and aren’t blocked on a custom domain. We’re sequencing custom-domain delivery against tier-gating, billing, and the Solo+ subscription flow so it lands cleanly all at once.

When the custom-domain surface ships, we’ll publish:

  • The exact DNS record to add at your registrar.
  • The verification + SSL provisioning timeline (typical: under an hour for Cloudflare-hosted domains; up to 24 hours for slower registrars).
  • The cancellation behavior (clean removal of the AthenAI-side attach; your registrar setup is untouched).

Until then: your Free subdomain is enough to put real traffic at, and your eventual custom domain will be a one-step attach when the surface goes live.
